General Overview

EUREKA Test.EPS aims to create a unique cross-border testing region and develop operational design domain (ODD)-centred certification processes for AD/ADAS driving functions (ADFs) with a special focus on environment perception systems (EPS) since the EPS has to provide safety critical information about the environment for the behaviour and motion planning part of the AD/ADAS driving function. Within the certification process the strengths of real-world testing and simulation methods are to be combined to optimize and shorten the time-to-market of AD/ADAS driving functions and EPS.

Furthermore, the project aims to test and certify reliable and robust AD/ADAS driving functions for safe and trustworthy automated mobility. It addresses societal, strategic economic and research goals of different current research programmes on national and European level with focus on personal mobility and vehicle technology:

  • Increase of traffic safety for all traffic participants

AD/ADAS driving functions enable the automation for specific ODDs. EUREKA Test.EPS will focus on test and verification methods for AD/ADAS driving functions to enable reliable and robust EPS. This will lead to increased traffic safety as a result of enabling more robust and reliable driver assistance systems in the short-term and pave the way to higher levels of vehicle automation in the future.

  • Further development of interconnected, transnational transport systems and sustainable mobility services

EUREKA Test.EPS will strengthen the connectivity between the AUT and HU traffic network by initiating a transnational testing area, combining the respective traffic systems including the border crossings.

  • Creation of reference applications and demonstrators

EUREKA Test.EPS will develop an ODD-based certification process for AD/ADAS driving functions, which can be seen as a reference best-practice application. The development will be demonstrated in a large-scale demonstration, thereby setting de-facto standards by defining commonly accepted key challenges for the region first, and then for the EU and beyond.

  • Establishing and promoting international cooperation

EUREKA Test.EPS will involve all relevant stakeholders (technical and non-technical) and analyse complementarities/synergies between AUT and HU partners to identify promising business cases and to eventually develop a catalogue of approaches and measures to increase the visibility of the central European region regarding AD/ADAS verification and testing.
EUREKA Test.EPS will ultimately attract various stakeholders such as OEMs, Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers, e.g. sensor and sensor systems manufacturers, as well as certification bodies, and will strengthen the market presence of the Central European AD industry.
EUREKA Test.EPS will strengthen the Central European region through the establishment of a transnational cooperation between AUT und HU including joint testing and certification of automated vehicles based on the complementarity/added value of the involved test regions.

  • Methods and technologies that raise the value of cross-border testing above the values as the sum of the individual test environments

EUREKA Test.EPS will combine the USPs of different test tracks in AUT and HU, strengthening collaboration between regional actors to enable new business opportunities along the whole V-model and for homologation. The unique mix of AD experts and certification bodies will focus from the beginning of the project on the definition and quality control of relevant test scenarios. This avoids costly and time-consuming brute-force approaches for scenario extraction and testing; thus, enabling the certification of advanced and highly mature ADFs and EPS.
